Master Gardening Training

University of Missouri Extension Master Gardener training classes will be offered October 6-December 15, 2011 in Kirksville. Classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Classes will be held on a wide variety of gardening topics including diseases, insects, soils & fertilizer, vegetables, fruit, trees & shrubs, pruning, lawn care, flowers and landscaping. Cost for the training is $150 per person.  To be a Master Gardener, you must attend 30 hours of classroom training AND provide 30 hours of volunteer service your first year after training.  Fifty dollars is refundable upon completion of your first 30 hours. For more information and to register, contact the Adair County Extension Center at 660-665-9866. The deadline for registering is September 28 at noon.

Master Gardeners are adults of all ages who love gardening and who have some gardening experience. They are members of the local community who are interested in lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, gardens, and the environment. The primary responsibility of a Master Gardener is to answer questions from area residents about home horticulture, and to help them find environmentally sound solutions to gardening and landscape problems, in addition to assisting with University Extension horticulture programming.

Homebrew Workshop!

Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival- Update

The date and frequency of the Primitive Skills group has changed to Every Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30.  The calendar will hold the exact dates and locations (sometimes we’ll meet outdoors instead of at the KPEC).

Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival Group

We’re excited to be a part of the hosting and forming of a new group in town focused on sharing, learning, and teaching Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival Techniques.  The group moderators, Emily and Kevin, have both worked with the famous Tom Brown, Jr of the Tom Brown, Jr Tracker School.

The group will be meeting at our Permaculture House at 216 N Ely every other Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 (or as long as the topic takes).  The first meeting will be on Sept. 4th, but you can check our calendar to keep up on the every other week schedule.  Topics will be chosen based on what people want to learn and what people can teach.

Sheet Mulching Workshop

We’ll be putting on the first workshop of a hopeful many to come this Saturday, August 21st at 9:00 AM at 903 E Orchard St. We’ll be teaching a no-dig gardening method called Sheet Mulching, or Lasagna Gardening.

There will be 15-30 minutes of information about Sheet Mulching, its benefits, and a how to, then we’ll go right into the hands on of sheet mulching an area of a garden bed for three new Kirksville residents.

As always, the workshop is by donation, so everyone is welcome. There will be water and there’s word that there’ll be snacks for the people working on the sheet mulching. We’ll work until noon or until the sheet mulching is finished, whichever comes first. Feel free to stop by at any point, even if you can’t make it for the whole workshop.
