Resources

This is an ongoing list of local resources Northeast Missouri, as well as any great resources that are in line with the ethics and goals of permaculture. The local foods list was originally at the Covert Cupboard website here, and I will continue to update both. If you know of someone who is, or you are a producer of foods in the NEMO area, or if you know of any other resources we should add to the list, please email us at admin (at) kvpermaculture (dot) org so we can compile the plentiful resources of NEMO in one easy to access place!

  • Sunrise Farm
    • Sunrise Farm has been around for a long time, first settled by Mark Slaughter's grandfather many years ago. His family has been on the farm off and on for the last twenty years and returned to the farm full time last June, 2008. He is a master gardener, having completed the coursework in November 2007. The Slaughter's have been gardening in Mark's grandmother's old location for the last few years and just started selling some vegetables in 2008. While not certified organic, Sunrise Farm does practice chemical-free growing methods. They use a combination of raised beds and bio-intensive beds, as well as "in the ground." As of late January 2010 they were ordering early season seeds for planting starts including onions, lettuce, spinach and radishes. Look for their heirloom selection of crops for the 2010 growing season!

Local Farmers

Our friend Hallie Lambert helped put together this extensive list of NEMO farmers. This link is to a pdf file, so you may need to use a different program to view it.

Garden/Farm

We've collected a few great, free/cheap resources for starting and maintaining a garden.

    Mulch
  • Wood Mulch
    • Cannaday Tree Service in Kirksville will drop off chipped wood mulch at your house for free if you live near the site of a tree they're removing. Awesome people, great mulch. He won't chip anything that is diseased or harmful to a garden (such as a Black Walnut)
  • Straw
    • Check the NEMO trader (available at most stores in town for free) or ask around with the La Plata amish or at the Country Variety Store in La Plata on HWY 156. We recently bought bales for 2.50 each.
  • Soil Tests

    • If you're concerned about Heavy Metals (eg Lead) then you can send a soil sample into the UMass Extension for $9.00. We were attempting to do a heavy metal test through Missouri Extensions and it was going to cost us around $250. $9 seems better for our budget.
  • Wood
    • Eli Miller in La Plata off of 156 (Amish, so no phone) mills Oak from within 60ish miles of La Plata. Good prices, but you have to go to him and put in an order to be picked up later, so plan ahead. I've heard he'll sell firewood by the truckload for pretty cheap too. He also has a mountain of sawdust if you happen to need any.

Web

This section will be expanded upon soon, but to start- a brand new forum has opened up for NEMO gardners to connect at nemogardens.com.
